How to Organise Your Wardrobe

Em NewtonStep 1: how to declutter clothes
Organising a wardrobe is not simply about rearranging what’s already there. The first step is to decide what really deserves a place on your rail.
Begin by taking everything out. For each item of clothing, ask yourself when you last wore it. For anything you haven’t worn in more than a year, take time to decide whether to keep it, store it or rehome it.
Our Another Life initiative is all about loving your clothes for longer and giving them a new home when you’re finished with them. You can choose to repair, resell or recycle clothing you no longer want.
Step 2: invest in storage space
Next, it’s time to do an audit of your storage. If you don’t have enough room to store things in your bedroom, it’s obviously going to be difficult to keep your clothing organised.
While wardrobes and rails (like this open wardrobe) are ideal for hanging clothes and storing shoes, chest of drawers are suited to smaller items such as underwear and items that can be folded such as jumpers.
If you’re still tight on space, some beds (like this two-drawer storage bed) have built-in storage to bridge any storage gaps. Ottomans are also a good choice. These can be a great place to store items such as towels and bedding.
Step 3: how to maximise wardrobe space
Ultimately, there’s a limit to how much bedroom furniture your room can accommodate. A clever way to maximise existing wardrobe space is by investing in storage solutions that maximise internal space.
Slimline hangers help you get the most out of hanging space, while shoe racks and boxes help you make use of your wardrobe's floor for storing shoes. For keeping accessories all in one place, baskets and storage boxes are ideal. Vacuum bags are life-savers when it comes to storing bulky items such as spare bedding, sportswear and coats when not in use.
Suitcases are can be a storage challenge; however, putting them under the bed or on top of the wardrobe often works well. Make the most of the space by filling empty suitcases with belongings you don't often need.
Step 4: how to organise clothes in wardrobe
The way you organise your wardrobe should make getting dressed easier. Organising by season can be a sensible option if storage space is limited. Keep current-season pieces on your main rail and store off-season items elsewhere, rotating them as necessary.
Another simple method is by category. Separate your shirts, knitwear, trousers and so on, and hang them together. This approach works particularly well if you dress by building an outfit around one item. For example, if you start by choosing a top or a pair of trousers.
Alternatively, you could even arrange by colour for a more aesthetically-appealing approach.
Step 5: get into the habit of regular wardrobe maintenance
Now that you know how to organise your wardrobe and everything is super tidy, you’ll want to keep it that way. Committing to regularly refining and organising your wardrobe prevents it becoming a massive chore.
Plus, a little-and-often approach helps you to recognise what really deserves a place on your rail and whether there’s anything new you want to invest in. Try to commit to 30 minutes or an hour once a month to keep on top of things.
